Located on the Kyrenia mountain range in North Cyprus, Saint Hilarion Castle is a stunning fortress that has stood the test of time. The castle was named after Hilarion the Great , a hermit who lived in the area during the 4th century and died in a cave. The Byzantines built this castle in the 10th century. The castle has served various purposes over the years, including functioning as a prison, an observatory, and a military outpost.

Architecture of Castle

The castle consists of three parts. The upper part of the castle was the house of the royal family and the middle and lower parts were for economic purposes. A 1.4 m thick Byzantine wall of rough masonry surrounded the upper part.

The Lusignans built the entrance, which was guarded by a semicircular tower in the east. Inside the dam is a courtyard with two peaks on both sides of it. Also, there is a ruined kitchen in the northeast of it.

The upper floor is known for its carved windows and in the pictures above you can see some of them.
